I’ve been planning for this day for weeks: reading, assembling resources, structuring lessons, getting excited… and yesterday our English classes began in earnest!
English Tutoring: the First Day
We’re offering in-studio and virtual English classes for middle and high school students – and our first class was in the studio. Two of the three students had previously taken arts classes with us through the Centauri Arts Academy, and one was joining us for the first time. We launched into a piece of personal writing to get to know each other, and afterwards I worked with one student on a reading comprehension, while the other two practised their essay writing skills. We looked together at an article which explored the impact of COVID on the rights of girls in developing nations, and explored the opening pages of the novel, Monstrous. We paused to play a word game for variety… and I glanced over at the clock. Astoundingly, almost two hours had passed, and our session had run well over time! I asked the students if any of them had noticed how much time had passed – and no one had.
I’ve taught for more than 20 years, and occasionally do get so deeply involved in teaching that I forget the time – but I’ve never had this happen to ALL my students as well! We concluded that the need to immerse themselves in learning had been so strong after 6 months away from school, they had lost themselves in the activity completely.
Our English Tutoring Sessions Continue All Week!
We’ve now expanded to offer English classes every evening – some virtual and others in our studio. Eventually, we’ll have 4 students in each group, but at the moment we still have openings in most classes. Reading and writing skills are essential for school and for life: if you’d like your son or daughter to join our program, reach out to us. It’s possible to join at any time, and we’re working with all levels, from students who struggle in school, to gifted writers looking for enrichment.
