SHSM Certifications: All Sectors

If you have several SHSM sectors in your school, choose from the following training programs applicable to all sectors. These programs can also be offered to co-op students

Customer Service

We use role play and teams games to teach customer service skills including appropriate language and body language, responding to diverse needs, problem solving, effective apology and conflict resolution

Stress Management

Understand good and bad kinds of stress and how to respond to them! We explore stress management strategies and lifestyle choices through interactive exercises, team activities and solo reflective tasks.

Leadership

Students define leadership, undertake an extended leadership task and then debrief, exploring their own performance and learning from it.

Communication Skills

What is communication? We look at ways to build connections with others through greetings, the words we speak, how we write and effective body language.

Public Speaking

Students develop public speaking strategies, create a speech and deliver it to a partner or the group. This session is a fun and non- threatening introduction to a vital workplace skill.

Teaching & Instructing

Most career paths involve teaching or training others. In this SHSM cert, we use group activities to define teaching and help students navigate this essential skill.(Led by an experienced teacher who is also a business owner)

Sector-Partnered Experiences for Arts and Culture students OR a Combination of Sectors

This full day program is led by director/business owner, Julie Hartley, and has been offered to wide acclaim in schools across the province. It can be tailored to Arts and Culture students (who often need to generate their own career opportunities) and can also be adapted for any other sector or combination of sectors.

Our Sector-Partnered Experience includes:

Introduction to Innovation using practical team activities
Exploration of Creativity through industry-related problem-solving
Entrepreneurship: generating original concepts through ‘the Reversal Method’
Anecdotes from an experienced business owner
Why ICE skills are essential in the workplace
A chance to generate original business ideas based on your unique skills/interests
Solving an industry problem
Self-assessment at the end of the day

Throughout the day, students not only learn about entrepreneurship from a professional who is a long-time entrepreneur – they also generate ideas for their own businesses, looking at entrepreneurship as a very real career option.

Teachers are provided with all our teaching materials in advance, including the student workbook, PowerPoint presentation and lesson overview.
