If you are looking to enhance your child’s writing skills, or if your child/teen loves writing and wants to learn more, you will likely be interested in our Creative Writing Classes and English Tutoring Program: but how do you know which option is the best choice?
Here are some points to consider, when choosing between Creative Writing and English Tutoring:
- The Creative Writing Courses at Centauri Arts are for young people who love creative writing, or want to try it. We don’t check grammar, or annotate student work. We don’t even insist that they share their work with us, if they choose not to. Our Creative Writing Classes are for personal interest… though we certainly teach writing techniques that will help them become better writers.
- While our English Tutoring program does include creative writing, it also includes reading comprehension, paragraph structure, essay construction and other skills related to Language Arts and English classes in elementary and high school. We DO teach grammar and language conventions – though in a fun manner that is engaging and creative.
- If your student loves literature, our English Tutoring program is a better choice. We explore Shakespeare, short stories across genres and poetry from the sixteenth century to the present day. We also look at memoirs and novels – as excerpts or complete works. Students in our English Tutoring program learn to analyze, discuss and write about a range of text across continents and centuries.
- Our Creative Writing Classes often allow for a specific focus: for example, our Writing for Television and Film Course or Short Story Course. Thus, for a young person who loves to write, it’s possible to be quite specialised by choosing one of our Creative Writing Courses for children or teenagers.
- English Tutoring students always share their work with the instructors, so if your student is looking for feedback, this is the way to go.
- Our Creative Writing Courses usually have between 6 and 12 writers in each class. The atmosphere is informal and creative. We build a community of writers together. Our English Tutoring programs are quite small – a maximum of 6 students in a group, working at a similar level.
- Our English Tutoring classes at 90 minutes in length, meeting once per week, and students also complete a piece of homework a week – working for a maximum of 1 hour between classes. Students sign up at any time, for blocks of 12 weeks, and can remain with us from September through to June, if they wish. Our Creative Writing classes are semestered, with one 12-week program beginning in September and another in February.
Both our English Tutoring program and Creative Writing classes are offered virtually and in-person in our Toronto studio. We have Creative Writing Courses and English Tutoring options available for ages 8-18.
We are always happy to discuss the needs of your child, to help you decide what will be best. Please call us at 416 766 7124.
