Creative Writing Retreat in Mexico 2021!

I just returned from our first ever Creative Writing Retreat to Merida, Mexico! Our creative writing retreat focused on memoir, poetry, planning novels, writing short stories, playwriting, creating characters, getting an agent and more. A wonderful time was had by all. Our Mexico Writing Retreat was structured the same way as our Creative Writing Retreats in Costa Rica, with creative writing classes held for 2-3 hours every morning, sightseeing opportunities most afternoons, group dinners and writing-related social events on occasional evenings. Our creative writing classes in Merida, Mexico included a session on sources of inspiration, and another on incorporating secrets and subtext. All writers who requested it received a critique of their work from the group, and we shared an exercise that had everyone creating [...]

How do you Plan a Novel?

So you love creative writing and you have an idea for a novel – but where do you begin? Here Are Some Tips to Get You started! 1. Map out your story. Begin by doing this in a general way. What is the ‘status quo’ for your characters before the story begins? What is the climactic event of the story? How is the character changed by the end of the novel? 2. Identify key elements of the novel What is the ‘inciting incident’ that sets story in motion? Look for rising and falling action in the story. Will the reader be gripped throughout? Why? Every writer has their own method for planning. Some plan every detail of the novel before they begin to write, in [...]

The Benefits of a Creative Writing Retreat

If you love creative writing, you’ll know that carving out the time to write can be a challenge. We all lead busy lives, and our own interests often give way under the pressure of family, work, and daily obligations. It ‘s tough to find inspiration – and to stay inspired. When we encounter difficulties with our writing, we’re on our own and it’s easy to get discouraged. What are the benefits of writing retreats? On a creative writing retreat, these challenges fall away. You get to put reality on hold and be the writer you always wanted to be – not alone, but in the company of others who share your interests. What’s even more wonderful is that you do this in a gorgeous location, [...]

It’s time to reserve your post-pandemic Creating Writing Retreat in Mexico or Costa Rica!

In the last 12 months our international writing retreats have been on hold because… well, we all know. But with vaccinations now well under way, most of us are starting to think about the future again – and to plan our post-pandemic adventures. In December, we’re running a one-week creative writing holiday to the beautiful city of Merida, in Mexico, and in February 2021 we’re offering two creative writing retreats to our rainforest lodge in Costa Rica. A writing retreat is the perfect way to explore a new interest, kickstart a creative project or carve out a chunk of time to work on your memoir, poetry collection or novel. Mornings are spent in writing workshops, as we build a community, inspiring one another. Afternoons are [...]

Starting to Write

Recently, a parent called to book their child on one of our summer writing camps. At the end of our conversation she said, rather hesitantly, “I’ve always wanted to write, too. It’s just than I don’t know where to begin.” This blog is for her. Anyone can write. You don’t need terrific literacy skills, or a degree. You don’t need to be a keen reader, nor do you need excessive amounts of free time. Talent isn’t important, and neither is a fancy laptop. All you need is a pen (or pencil) and a sheet of paper. While some people write specifically for publication and others feel they need an audience for their writing to make it worthwhile, there are also plenty of writers who produce [...]

The Centauri Costa Rica Writing Retreat 2019!

Sometimes, we all need to retreat. From schedules, responsibilities, routine and expectations. Our campers ‘retreat’ when they join us at camp each summer and our adult writers (plus their families) retreat when they join us in Costa Rica each February. But we don’t just retreat from – we retreat to. This past week, he 12 of us retreated to nature, healthy food, daily writing workshops, an immersion in our personal projects, wonderful weather and a community of like-minded souls. All of us came back rejuvenated and with fresh inspiration for our work. Finca Luna Nueva is our magical writing base in the heart of rain-forest in Costa Rica. Mornings were spent in writing workshops, on a gorgeous deck looking down on the bamboo restaurant and [...]

Our Costa Rica Writing Retreat 2018!

Our third annual writing retreat to Costa Rica finished this week, and what a fabulous adventure it was. Here’s a list of our most memorable experiences: The Group! A wonderful collection of people from across North America. We had seasoned writers, and participants writing creatively for the first time. Poets, playwrights, short story writers, novelists, memoir writers and people trying various forms. Some of us had attended retreats before, while others had barely travelled. Our group was supportive, encouraging, positive and eager to launch into this amazing experience. Together we formed a community we will value forever. Finca Luna Nueva! Our lodge is one of the most relaxing, rejuvenating and beautiful places you could ever wish for – a paradise in the heart of rainforest. [...]
