FAQs
I haven’t attended a Creative Writing Retreat, nor written anything before. Is that okay?
Absolutely! At our creative writing retreats, we’ll inspire you to begin a writing project, and give you the time and confidence to build your skills as a writer. You won’t have to share anything you write unless you choose to, but if you do, you can be certain of an enthusiastic response. Never having attended a creative writing retreat before isn’t a problem, either. And if you don’t usually travel – don’t worry. A writing retreat is the perfect place to begin.
I am an experienced writer with a near-complete novel. Will I benefit from this retreat?
Absolutely! Our retreats offer the perfect ambiance to support you as you hunker down and complete a project. If you run into challenges, there are plenty of creative minds to help get you unstuck, and if you need additional support, I’m always happy to make time to chat. Our workshops will prove invaluable, whether you are looking for editing strategies or beginning to think about agents and publishers.
My husband/friend wants to attend, but doesn’t want to write. Is that okay?
Yes! As long as your friend or partner is sharing your room, they are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, our writing retreats are not suitable for children.
I have special needs – mobility, diet etc. Can you accommodate me?
Las Cascadas is a short uphill walk from most amenities, though a taxi can usually be arranged. Our cottages and the onsite facilities at Las Cascadas involve negotiating a few stairs.
Arenal Observatory Lodge is quite spread out. From the cottages to the restaurant, you will need to walk for about 10 minutes (though a shuttle is available). You should also take note that the lodge is a long drive away from emergency medical services. It may not be suited to people with health concerns.
I have dietary needs…
Vegetarians will have no problem on either retreat. In Quepos you can choose from many different restaurants, or cook for yourself, so dietary needs should never be an issue. At the Arenal Observatory Lodge we have the choice of just one restaurant, due to the remote nature of the lodge (though we can eat in La Fortuna on one evening). If you have dietary needs, please let us know in advance so we can tell the restaurant.
I have rarely travelled outside North America. I’m worried about safety, currency, the language – how will I know what to do?
Costa Rica is great choice for inexperienced travellers. There is a well-developed tourist network, the roads are excellent, the health care is top notch, most of the people you meet will speak English, and you will be spending US Dollars. We will help you with all the details along the way.
Can I use my laptop to write? Is there wi fi?
Yes, and yes!
What will the weather be like when we go?
Quepos area will likely be hot and sunny – though rain is possible. We will have the option to hold our workshops in A/C, inside the dining room area of the 3-bedroom cottage.
Arenal Observatory Lodge is located in rainforest. You can expect rain every day, though it often clears up quickly. The weather is milder, so it’s pleasant to be outside. Nights can even be cool.
Are these retreats suited to people on a budget?
At Las Cascadas you will have access to a kitchen, so you can save money by buying your own food. At Arenal Observatory Lodge writers on a budget can choose to stay in ‘Casona’, a cottage with 5 bedrooms and 2 shared bathrooms. This is where some of our workshops will take place – and there is a glorious view over the lake!
Both Las Cascadas and AOL have a room with two single beds that can accommodate two writers. If you are interested in sharing a room to halve costs, please let us know.
Can I speak with someone before I book?
Of course! Our office number is +1 416 766 7124. We’re happy to take as long as you like to answer all your questions. We welcome just 7-10 people on each trip, which means we can offer a very personal approach. We’re here to help.
