Creative Writing Retreats and Holidays in Mexico

Writing Courses, Holidays & Retreats in Mexico!

Welcome to our Creative Writing Retreat
in the Magical City of Merida, Mexico!

There are times in our lives when we crave new sights and sounds. Fresh sources of inspiration. Unexpected encounters. Moments of awe and delight. We long for the kinds of friendships that can only emerge from shared interests. We dream of an altered perspective of self, based on the absorption of new experiences, skills and ideas.

If this sounds familiar, and you love to write, then join us for a special 7-day retreat experience.

It’s difficult to imagine a place more transformative than the cultural city of Merida, located in the heart of the Yucatan, Mexico. If the Yucatan conjures up images of the mega resorts around Cancun, think again. Merida is three hours and a world away. It’s a city that heaves with Mayan and colonial Spanish history. A city filled with glorious architecture and packed with culture. Roam at will through neighbourhoods of mint green, sherbet pink and bright peach facades that seem plucked from a fairy-tale. People-watch in the exotic markets, or choose a patio on which to write, sipping a margarita and watching the world go by.

In the heart of the city, behind old stone walls warmed by the sun, lies the colonial edifice of Luz En Yucatan – our boutique hotel for the week. Luz is an oasis of calm and tranquility where you will find nooks and crannies in which to write, an appealing little pool, Mexican tiles and Mayan-style ornamentation, trailing flowers and the perfect environment in which to live, learn and write.

Historical Fiction Prompts for Writers

In our last blog, we looked at how online resources have transformed a writer's research process. So let's explore this idea with a creative writing prompt. Writing Prompt: Historical Fiction Write down a daily task or hobby that interests you. Now, choose a specific historic period and location. Come up with a close approximation of your interest that may fit with the period and location. Write down what you already think you know about that activity. Now, set a timer. Give yourself 15 minutes to research that specific activity online. Read everything you can about it. Look at illustrations. Become an [...]

The Benefits of a Creative Writing Retreat

I've attended many Creative Writing retreats over the years. A writing retreat in a fishing village in Mexico. Another on the wind-swept moors in Devon, England. Retreats in Scotland and Wales. I've also run dozens of retreats myself. Our creative writing retreat centre in Canada hosted more than 100 writers, and these days, we run creative writing retreats in Costa Rica: and a new writing retreat in Mexico. Why  Attend a Creative Writing Retreat? Writers rarely have the opportunity to focus exclusively on writing. We're spouses, parents, sons, daughters, home owners, and whatever it is we do for a living. [...]
